This morning you will embark on a city tour featuring an orientation of Salvador, its people, culture and traditions. This tour is an African Heritage Upper City Tour. We trace the African roots of Salvador on a city tour which combines the newer, modern section and the older Historical Center of Salvador, the Pelourinho area, so called after the pillory which stood in the main square, in front of the central slave market. We visit the Afro-Brazilian Museum, which traces the West African origins of the city, and see the superb wooden sculpted panels of the orixá's by Salvador's most celebrated artist, Carybé. Museum entrance fee included. We visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the famous Black church, built with meager resources over a period of almost 100 years. Next door is the intimate Bahian Gastronomy Museum which focuses on the African influence on Bahia cuisine

Today is a full day program that takes you deep into the Bahian countryside for a trip to another time and another way of life, and the incredible Boa Morte Festival.
We have an early morning departure to Cachoeira, a charming colonial town in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Paraguassu River and later take a walking tour of the town with its many wood sculptors, ateliers, and bustling markets. The highlight of the trip is a visit to the Sisterhood of the Boa Morte, a sorority that traces its origins back to the time of slavery. Upon arrival you will attend to a religious ceremony (that happens once a year!!) in the Mass followed by procession, through the streets of the town, with the upright figure of the MaryNossa Senhora das Glórias (Assumption). The Sisters are dressed in their full gala clothes of black, white and red. This is the highlight of the celebration. (Lunch is on your own). Late in the afternoon, the Sisters will have their traditional Samba de Roda, a spinning samba, only found in the Cachoeira region. It will continue until early evening. (Dinner is on your own). There will be a late return to your Salvador hotel.
