The highest reaches of Rio’s Atlantic Coastal Range is generally referred to as Itatiaia, encompassing in part the great national park of the same name. It is here, three hours northwest of Rio, that some of the most remote and breath-taking scenery in Brazil is to be found. In the lower elevations, lush valleys, waterfalls and tropical Atlantic rainforest alive with wildlife are to be enjoyed. As you move into the higher elevations, you pass the timber line and the terrain changes to a rocky, Alpine-like, oftentimes fog-enveloped region, where snow flurries can occur in wintertime.
