The Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve is an area with more than 1 million hectares of lakes, marshy forests and jungle. Together with the Amanã Reserve and the Jaú National Park, it forms the largest area of protected flooded forestlands in the world. The reserve was chosen the best destination for ecotourism in the world by the North American magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Located in the Middle Solimões, the reserve became a protected area in 1990 when it was declared an Ecological Sanctuary.
