Belo Horizonte, the capital of the State of Minas Gerais and the 3rd largest metropolitan city in Brazil, is a place of intensive cultural and economic activity. The city was specifically designed as a replacement capital for Ouro Preto and was modeled after Washington D.C of the United States. The city's design was also largely influenced by the famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer who designed the Pampulha District.
